In the spring of 2004, my husband Christopher and I were married.  We took a road trip up the coast and had the pleasure of touring Hearst Castle. What a magnificent place. The remainder of our honeymoon in the sleepy beach town of Morro Bay & Carmel.  This is not a glitz and glam type of resort. It is humble, charming, eclectic and quiet.  We stayed at the Masterpiece Motel and spent the day treasure hunting in town. For our son’s 10th birthday, we decided to revisit the place where we fell more deeply in love.

This post is a bit out of order since we actually went camping before the balloon ride, but I thought it would be nice to share what we’ve been up to this summer. We camped at Morro Strand State Beach since it was inexpensive and available.   We had to make a few concessions, but overall , we had a lovely time:)   Click this photo to read my review.

After camp was set up, and the winds died down, we took an evening stroll on the beach. Almost stepped on Mr. Crab! The sky was beautiful and the hills were lit up like giant christmas trees.

On easy way to save money on family trips is to cook!  Pick and choose which meals you want to have at camp ahead of time. Since I did all my grocery shopping online (and had it delivered), it made meal planning a sinch! Whipped up a nice, filling breakfast on the grill with thick cut bacon, fried organic eggs, tortillas, homestyle potatoes and Broguieres glass bottle milk.  Since the trolly wasn’t available until after 11, we decided to get an early start and take “Old Blue” into town.

Stopped by  Morro Bay Beads and made homemade necklaces, earrings and bracelets . They also have a lovely garden in the back full of native plants and herbs.

Locals recommended Taco Temple for lunch so we decided to stop in. While this place is a bit “pricey” the portions are huge. 1 taco will do you just fine. They also have unlimited chips and salsa and homemade desserts. Yum!

We enjoyed a fantastic kayaking adventure!  My daughter and I spent most of the time laughing as our kayak went bump and round (as opposed to straight ahead).  Without knowing, it turned out to be a “race” to the seals thanks to our competitive boys.

On our final night, we indulged in old fashioned s’mores while gazing at the bright stars in the night sky, searching for falling stars and constellations. The distant sounds of crashing waves and mysterious creatures of night sang us to sleep. It was a very good day.

After packing up camp early that morning, we headed over to Frankie & Lolas which is situated near near Morro Rock. We shared their French Toast, Classic & Da Bomb breakfast. Get there early or be prepared to wait for a bit.  Ladies…a little surprise awaits you in restroom :)

The last stop on our trip was to a small, unpopulated beach in Santa Barbara. The sun was warm, the sky was blue and the waves enveloped us ever so gently. Thank you Summer & Happy Birthday Elisha Boy!

I can’t say it enough. Chris Schlarb is an incredible husband, father and friend. He’s currently working 2 jobs and his day usually starts around 5am as a driver. His second job is a labor of love. He is a musician, producer & composer. Some days, he works from 5am until midnight and gets up the next morning without complaint. He keeps his head down and works hard each and every day. For this and many other reasons, I decided to plan a surprise adventure for his birthday.
